Michele Morrow has mentioned banning books in North Carolina if elected to public office. She was part of a group that filed a lawsuit to remove titles from libraries in Wake County before her unsuccessful run for the local board of education.
Her wish to remove books that she deems “obscene” through her Christian Nationalistic lens has only grown and her opportunity in a state wide election to affect all public schools (not just Wake County) makes the election in November that much more important.
Here is something to consider:
In Florida where the banning of books in school libraries has happened, major publishing companies are now suing over free speech laws.
Pen America (referenced above) has a map that shows the number of banned books in school libraries.
Florida has over 5000 titles banned under DeSantis’s governorship.
North Carolina has less than 100.
Would love to hear what Morrow would do if her wishes to ban what she deems obscene are actually challenged in court by publishing companies because it is happening in Florida where so much of what she has molded her campaign from is falling apart.
Actually, I would like to know if she has even read the books she is trying to ban.
